Yes, most women who use tampons will use pads or liners as back-up because tampons leak suddenly when full. When using tampons you should also alternate with pads and use pads with light flow. If you want to avoid using both tampons and pads you may want to consider using menstrual cups that can be worn at any time and don't leak like tampons do.

If a woman has a heavy flow (a lot of period blood) a tampon might not be enough. They could leak out blood and it could be really embarrassing if they did. So, for the extra protection, they wear a sanitary pad. It's not always that women have to have this much protection but it just depends on the body type.

I always like to wear a panty liner when I wear tampons because I don't want it to go threw. On the other hand I have a heavy period so I need to change mine more often than 6 hours so try starting with panty liners and if you feel its usless then just go without!

Tampons commonly leak and when they do it tends to be very sudden so there's not much you can do to deal with it before it leaks through clothing, thus many people use pads, pantiliners or period underwear as back-up in case their tampons leak on heavy days.

It's unhygienic and unhealthy to use tampons throughout your periods too, you can't use tampons before your period, with light flow, overnight, or if you have a vaginal infection, and you should also alternate with pads as often as possible to allow your vagina a chance to clean itself after tampon use.

Yes, tampons do commonly cause increased menstrual cramps.

Tampons can expend into the cervix, which is already sitting lower in your vagina during menstruation and is more sensitive during this time too, this will increase cramps. There are also theories that tampons may increase cramps by tugging at vaginal walls while they absorb moisture, and chemicals in commercial tampons may cause irritation and worsening vaginal health.

If you experience increased cramps while using tampons switch to other menstrual products such as menstrual pads, menstrual cups, menstrual sponges, or softcups - these don't increase cramps.

No, you don't have to wear a tampon or pad during menstruation.

There are other menstrual products such as menstrual cups and softcups which you can wear instead of wearing tampons, as well as various different types of tampons and pads which may be preferable to tampons and pads you've tried previously if that's the issue.

You can also go without using any form of menstrual product, either using free bleeding or menstrual release. Free bleeding is simply allowing yourself to bleed, menstrual flow is no less hygienic than vaginal discharge so allowing it onto your clothing isn't a problem in terms of hygiene - if your flow is light or you wear dark clothes in layers the bleeding won't leak through to the outside of clothing. Menstrual release is learning to control vaginal muscles and feel when flow is coming out to be able to keep the flow inside your body until you go to the bathroom to let it out - many women do this naturally without realizing this is what it's called, but many women have to learn to do this.

Tampons can leak, especially if a person has a heavy period, thus some will use pads and tampons at the same time for double the protection during menstruation on heavy days. Even with a regular flow many people use pads as back-up to tampons to feel more secure to prevent leaking, also when people are first using tampons they don't know what absorbency to use so again pads as back-up.

When using tampons pads are also still needed instead of tampons: tampons can't be worn with light flow, before menstruation, with a vaginal infection, overnight, and people who use tampons also need to occasionally alternate with pads to allow their vagina a chance to clean itself.

Not quite. A pad is an external menstrual product that sits in the underwear to absorb flow once it leaves the body. A tampon is an internal menstrual products that sits in the vagina to absorb flow before it leaves the body. Both products are a means of dealing with menstrual flow but their use is different, tampons also pose health risks so there are more precautions to follow.

Yes, you can use a tampon and a pad at the same time - most women will use pads as back-up because once tampons are full they leak, and it's not always easy to tell when the tampon is full. If you're new to tampons it's a good idea to use pads as back-up until you know what absorbency to use on what day of your period too. If you use tampons you also need to be using pads occasionally too, such as using pads instead of tampons at night or with light flow.

Yes, it's common. A lot of women wear tampons and a panty liner or a thin pad to prevent "accidents" during the heaviest part of their period. Saves a lot of embarrassment.

Can you use a tampon in a hot tub?

Yes, you can wear a tampon to the water park as long as your flow is heavy enough for a tampon. You can also wear options such as menstrual cups and softcups, these can be worn even with light flow and for up to 12 hours so a much better option. If you do wear tampons be sure to time it so you can insert a fresh tampon just before going in the water, and you may need to insert a fresh tampon when you get out.
