With the engine running you should have a reading of 13.5 to 15.5 volts at the battery. So 14 volts is acceptable.
14 volts
Not necessarily. There are a lot of factors that can keep you from reading 14 volts at the battery, such as corrosion in the cable from the alternator to the battery.
The YTX 14-BS battery typically has a voltage rating of 12 volts.
Two possibles. Either the battery needs to be replaced, or the stator is not charging. First check the battery with the engine off, should have 12. 2 volts or more, if under 12 volts, then charge and check again. If under 12 volts, then replace. If over 12 volts, run engine, check the battery volts, should have over 13 volts at idle, rev up, should get over 14 volts. If battery still shows only 12. 2 or so volts, then the stator in the engine has to be replaced.
Your putting a charge on the battery when its running.
Actually A "12" volt battery produces 12 to 14 volts at almost any charge %, even though your guage showes the charge in volts, Its actually amperes that get reduced in batterys.,,,,,,,, 80% should be sufficient charge to start A vehicle that is in good condition.
generally if you hook up a multi-meter to the battery and start the engine it should read 13.5 or 14 volts, when you turn on headlights and other accessories the alternator should keep the battery charged up to at least 12 volts, you can also just check the battery to see how many volts it's putting out before you start the vehicle
1. Determine if the battery needs replacement or just a charge. Turn the motorcycle on to run, remove the seat, and check with a voltmeter if the voltage at the battery goes to 14 volts. 14 volts because it is a 14 volt charging system; a little below 14 is ok. Record value and shut off the bike. 2. Wait about 10 to 20 minutes and check the battery voltage again. it should not be below 12 volts, if so, change the battery. 3. Remove the black (-) wire first and then the red (+). There will be some sparks but not to serious. 4. pull the battery out and place a new, CHARGED, battery back in and reverse the above proceedure.
Try a new or other battery. You need around 14 volts to start vehicle. If vehicle starts with other or new battery. Then have your alternator check. Any Auto Zone will check it for FREE.
Your vehicle has a 12 volt system, charging should be approx. 14 volts with engine running. Acceptable range is 12.5-14.5 volts. If charging is above 15 volts (assuming you have a fully charged battery) you might have a bad regulator. A faulty regulator will discharge you battery when the engine is turned off.
Around 13.5 volts or can be as high as 14 volts.
1988 , 1100 ? Anyway, when the bike is running did you run a volt meter on the battery. Should read around 14. something volts. If it reads only the battery like 12.4 volts then most likely the stator is gone. Now what kind of bike was that again?
