In my opinion it is ok to ask that question.... but to the person you are talking to, it may sound like you are not confident in talking to them and so it may be a little awkward continuing the conversation if they always have the picture that you are not sure you're doing the right thing. Start talking and be sensitive to who they are as a person, but be confident in your ability to be yourself and enjoy making new friends.
