if you don't want to pay for premium gas, sell the WRX. You can do it, but your mileage will suffer as will your power. The Engine Control Unit or ECU will compensate for the lessor grade of fuel but only out of necessity for self-preservation. This is no way to enjoy driving and owning this vehicle. Any turbo or supercharged vehicle that calls for premium needs it. Under load, compression ratios in "boosted" engines are very high. Occassionally the low-compression at no-load is interpreted as an open door for cheaper 87 octane. This is not the case. 20 to 25 cents a gallon difference in the long run is not that much of a savings in a car that gets 25mpg.
