You are certainly correct. Depression is a sneaky little monster. Most of us feel we can handle the stresses in life and often don't become aware of the signals our body is giving off. The signals are: Weeks without sleep Distrubed sleep and waking up extremely tired. Listless Lack of appetite or eating too much. Disinterested in going out with friends or joining in family functions. Finding it difficult to go to school or work. Not keeping grades up at school or not doing your job well at work. Lack of concentration on a continuous basis. Disinterest in sex Disinterest in relationships with the opposite sex. Many people walk around and don't know they are depressed and simply shove it off as "the blues." It's when it lasts for more than 3 - 4 weeks. It is normal to be depressed at times such as losing a loved one to death or a divorce, etc., but when it goes on for months it becomes depression. It is best to seek out psychiatric help and there is no shame in this. It's a smart person that can go in "for a tune-up" and be sure they are handling their stress level well. I just did this not long ago when I was dealing with my dear mom who suffered from Dementia. It was so stressful I just wanted to be sure I was doing all the right things so I wouldn't become severely depressed. It turned out I was dealing with it and I am just fine. Exercise, eating well, having loved ones around and seeing your friends are all very healthy things to do. I volunteer, work and keep myself super busy. Good luck Marcy

Yes, it can. If your parents have depression, you are two to three times more likely to suffer from depression than others.
If anxiety and depression are correlated, there are three possible directions of causality. These are anxiety causes depression, depression causes anxiety, and there is an environmental stimuli that causes both anxiety and depression.

Disalike: Depression is a mental, physical, psychological health condition, often related to tramautic or stressful life-changes for an individual. Typically these changes are unwanted, and the person has difficulty developing coping mechanisms. Disillusionment is a state of mind, that does not necessarily affect one's immune system in the way that depression does. A person who is disillusioned may be perfectly healthy in other ways. Disllusionment is not the cause of depression. A person with depression may actually have an accurate mental interpretation of the things he/she relates to being depressed about. It is often said that depressed are negative in their thinking, and while this may be true, this does not garner whether or not they are accurate or disillusioned. Likewise, a positive person may be dissillusioned, and their disillusionment may be what keeps them happy! It is possible to be happy and dissilusioned, and it is also possible to be depressed and be dissillusioned. Yet it is also possible to be happy and be accurate, and it is also possible to be depressed an accurate. Alike: Both deal with mental processes, and the persons ability to cope with their mental process. Although depression is not only neurological, it is also physical. Whereas dissilusionment is purely mental. The similarilties pretty much end there. With both of them being neurological, brain activities. Keep in mind however that it is possible for people to be both depressed and dissillusioned, or accurate and depressed, or dissilusioned but not depressed. They are not necessarily inter-related.
There are several possible causes of chronic depression. Some of these causes include traumatic events, certain medications and substances, age (older individuals are more likely to suffer from depression), and genetics (depression can run in a family).
