There are 3 major types of bipolar disorder. There is bipolar 1, bipolar 2, and rapid cycling. Bipolar one is when there is recurrent episodes of mania and depression. Bipolar 2 is when there episodes of mild mania, which is called hypomania, and depression as well. In bipolar 2 the depression would seem to be the reason for seeking help. Finally there is rapid cycling bipolar disorder, and this is where 4 or more episodes happen in a year. In some cases, people afflicted with rapid cycling bipolar disorder may swing several times in a week or even a day.

There is a 4th type of Bipolar Disorder called the mixed episode type. Instead of manic (or hypomanic) episodes alternating with depressive episodes (in a characteristic ratio of one manic episode for every 4 to 5 depressive episodes), the mixed state is characterized by irritability and mood instability in combinaton with insomnia, appetite disturbances, and fluctuating energy levels. Also, suicidal thoughts may occur in the more severe episodes.

The common misconception is that bipolar patients only deal with manic and depressive feelings, but bipolar disorder is both a mental and physical disorder that can have a large amount of symptoms and in many cases ADD, Bipolar disorder,Borderline personality disorder, and schizophrenia can show similar symptoms. It is important to have regular meetings with a psychologist and/or psychiatrist so that he or she can determine what you are going through. There is so much more to bipolar than this. Bipolar disorder is a very misunderstood and complicated disorder.

Yes there are;

Bipolar I : severe depression and full-blown manic episodes, sometimes with psychosis. Severe effect on functionality in both the depressive and manic phases.

Bipolar II : severe depression and hypomania (a less severe form of mania). Hypomania causes an increase in functionality. Help is normally sought for the depressive phase.

Cyclothymia : mild depression and mania.

Also;

Rapid cycling : this can occur with any of the above three types, and is typically four or more episodes in a year.

Mixed state : being both manic and depressive at once. So high energy from the mania, low mood from the depression. Unsurprisingly, this leads to many suicides.

Bipolar disorder can be broken down into four main types:

  • Bipolar I has alternating periods of major depression and psychotic or full-blown manic episodes, with hallucinations and physical frenzy.
  • Bipolar II has periods of major depression, but hypomania instead of psychotic mania; hypomania is a milder form without psychotic symptoms or inability to work.
  • "Not Otherwise Specified" Bipolar has major depression, but elevated moods never quite become severe enough to be classified as hypomania.
  • Cyclothymic mood disorder has mild depression and hypomania which alternate in a rapid cycle lasting only a few days at a time.
