In the older days (pre-1998), this was not only possible, but quite common. The AMD K6 processor was engineered to work and fit on the same boards as Pentiums. However, their products have since diversified, and the chipsets use different and incompatible instructions, and the processors used totally different sockets.

Will any processor with a 775 socket work on your Asus motherboard?

Not necessarily. Support for the Pentium 4 was removed from the P35 and later chipsets, thus they may not run on such boards.

Will any Socket 775 motherboard support an Intel Core 2 Duo processor?

No. Older chipsets, such as the Intel 945 and older do not have the necessary support for a Core 2 Duo processor, even though they are often found on boards with an LGA775 socket. They also do not have the proper Front Side Bus speed, so even if the processor ran, it wouldn't reach its proper speed.

What is the difference between chipset and original motherboard?

RAM=Random Access Memory, used for fast swapping of data on computer Processor= a small chip on the motherboard performing millions+calculations a second. your computer uses ram all the time to keep background apps open, and to basically run everything. your computer uses your processor when you do graphic intensive or calculation intensive things, such as gaming, video converting, multiple things at once, like running Photoshop, a video encoder, your internet browser, and watching a movie. now if you want to know which to upgrade, it depends on the current status of your computer, and your aim of the upgrade.

What are the latest types of motherboard?

The newest motherboard is a relative term, as it can refer to chipset or manufacturer specific boards. The newest Intel chipset available is the Intel X58 Express chipset, which bears an LGA 1366 socket and supports the Nehalem (Core i7) architecture. Boards that use this chipset include the Asus P6T series and Rampage II, as well as Gigabyte's EX58 series boards, Foxconn Renaissance and Bloodrage, and many others.

What is Socket 7?

Super Socket 7 is a slight enhancement of the Socket 7 platform created by AMD and VIA after Intel abandoned the platform. The socket itself is not distinctive; it is the chipsets used with it that set it apart from Socket 7 boards. Namely, Super Socket 7 boards run at a faster FSB speed than ones with Intel chipsets. Intel stopped at 66 MHz, but AMD and VIA pushed it up to 100 MHz.
