On passenger jets , not all, it is necessary for the pilot to input to the onboard computer information about the airport that they are going to land at, such as the various runways, elevation and wind speed and direction which they get from the local airport tower. With this the computer can land the jet and bring it to a stop if required or slow it down to a speed where the pilot tales control and then steers the jet onto a taxiway and to the terminal building.
