Penetrating injuries to the neck can damage the jugular vein. Sometimes it also get damaged with bleeding during Central venous line, a procedure which involves cannulation of the neck veins for feeding or monitoring.

No, the jugular veins are very important to your body as they take away old, used blood from your head. Without it you would die.

You can likely live without 1-2 jugular veins. My left external and internal were removed during surgery and I know people who had similar surgery and both external were removed. The body has internal and external jugular veins, but if all are gone, you would not survive.
