Bloody stools or blood from the anus can be from many causes. Benign causes of bright red blood are usually an anal fissure or tear from trauma either from passing a large stool, or placing something into the rectum. Bloody stools can also be caused by intestinal infections, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal abnormalities, or colon cancer.
Dark black blood from the anus is always concerning and suggests a bleed in the upper gastrointestinal tract that should be evaluated immediately by a doctor.

∙ 13y agoI think a lot of people see blood in their stool and find it frightening because they think it's associated only with serious and unusual conditions. While there are many serious conditions which can cause it, the most common are relatively innocuous. If the blood is well oxygenated as evidenced by a fairly bright red, then chances are it is from on, near, or just outside the anus, such as a scratch or hemorrhoid, and less likely to be serious, although there are exceptions, so don't absolutely rule out a serious cause. Can you remember a scratching sensation at your last bowel movement? Did you eat anything recently, such as tortilla chips, which may have caused a sharp edge to scratch if not thoroughly chewed and digested with enough liquids? Do you have a hemorrhoid or hemorrhoids? If so, you should be OK to monitor the situation and see if it doesn't resolve on its own once the suspected cause is dealt with.
If the blood has a deep red or purplish color (currant jelly look), or if your stools a black and tarry, that could indicate a more serious problem, and, though not likely a medical emergency, you should see your doctor as soon as possible.
