Back in the military, we did a lot of nuclear/biological and chemical (NBC) training, we would use the came canister on our respirators over and over again, even in 'live' testing using CS gas. ( the canister we were given from stores was normally pre used) The basic rule was that as long as the the canister wasn't damaged, immersed in water, or you felt the effects (of the gas) while wearing it, you were good to go. We did, however, always have a spare canister in a sealed bag close at hand. Remember as well, canisters have an expiry date.

The Russian GP5 filters are not toxic. Don't worry. They just won't protect you from any NBC chemicals. You probably don't need to worry about that though because I doubt that you are going to be bathing in nuclear waste. The coffee can filters, on the other hand, have a much higher risk of containing asbestos. You can use the short, cylindrical filters, but not the tall ones.

Brita water filters are debated on safety. The filters do remove heavy metals, 99% of chlorine, and fluoride. The filters pose a danger because bacteria is not killed and if the filters are not changed properly the bacteria is in contact with the water.
