Yes, a fear of death, or at the very least a respect for it, is generally what keeps us from doing stupid things that get us killed.

The process of dying is not pleasant for anyone as it is part of the curse from the Fall. The Christian can be comforted in the process by the knowledge that they are nearly in the presence of the King, and leaving behind the tears and suffering. For the person who does not have this assurance, then the possibility that there is more to death than they have thought can be a perturbing thought...as it should be. Many hardened unbelievers have turned to God on their deathbed.

Not always. Many people die in their sleep. Even those who experience horrific catastrophes don't always die from them. Those who do, are instantly taken out of their Horror. I'm one of those people who have had a 'near death' experience. My body sustained injuries that I was not aware of until I woke. Even when I woke up, it took attempts to move to know that I was injured. I felt nothing physical, just peacefulness, while I was experiencing a view of the next world. I have heard other people who have had this experience tell pretty much the same thing. Most of us don't fear death now, only fear or sadness that we'll be losing the people or things that mean a lot to us.

The condition of the dead is made clear at Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, where we read: "The dead know nothing . . . There is no pursuit, no plan, no knowledge or intelligence, within the grave." (Moffatt) Death, therefore, is a state of nonexistence. The psalmist wrote that when a person dies, "he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish."-Psalm 146:4.

So the dead are unconscious, inactive. When pronouncing sentence upon Adam, God stated: "Dust you are and to dust you will return." (Genesis 3:19) Before God formed him from the dust of the ground and gave him life, Adam did not exist. When he died, Adam returned to that state. His punishment was death-not a transfer to another realm.

It's not the processes of dying. It's the unknown. People don't know if they are going to heaven or going to hell. No one wants to burn for eternity... The screams, the pain, the guiltiness. You will regret all sins... It is a scary thought. This is the main reason why death can be scary.

I work as a doctor. I'v seen a lot of deaths. And people ussualy act very calm during death, sometimes it even smiles.Maybe it's not so scary to die.
