Partially, the actual story has been spun into Propaganda for some groups with omissions of the actual situation.

A lawsuit was filed in New York to prevent a cross being erected in the World Trai Center, without equal opportunity for other religions who wish to have memorials there as well. As you can see, it's a question of equal rights over the perceived persecution of one religious group.

Of the 2792 people killed in the twin towers; 31 were Muslin Americans, 400 to 500 were Jewish Americans, and about 500 were non-religious Americans. With an unknown number of Americans being of another faith. So about half the victims were actually Christian.

Additionally, no other religious or non-religious group, other than Christian, has been permitted a memorial. And thats why the lawsuit was initiated. Not by just Atheists, but other groups (Jewish, Muslim, etc) as well, in a class action.
