I AM a Christian and was married when younger to a verbal/physical abuser and I tried in my marriage for 3 1/2 years, but it takes two. I always believed once you were married you were married for life. However, God expects both parties in a marriage to have respect for each other and I doubt very much it's a sin (I don't feel guilty) to have tried in a marriage such as mine and divorced. I met and married a wonderful man some years later and we will be married 35 years this August. First , a second marriage is only adultery and a sin if the first spouse never committed fornication.
Mt:19:9: And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Second,in the case of abuse, exodus 20:13:Thou shalt not kill;this includes yourself by staying in a relationship with an abusive spouse, but I am not referring to divorce .I am just referring to removing yourself from a dangerous situation (like living with such a spouse).
