When you use cruise control it does all it can to keep you going at the speed you set it at. That means if you are going up a steep hill it will hit the gas to try to maintain your speed. When going up hills if you slow down just a few miles an hour you can save more fuel.

Hard acceleration greatly reduces your fuel mileage. Many cruise controls will accelerate very hard when your car slows down.
