Christianity started in the Roman Empire, not Rome itself. It started in Judea, which was a province of this empire, with the teachings of Jesus Christ, who was a Jew. When it spread though the Roman Empire it developed many competing theologies. The two most important ones were those of the Greek/Eastern Church and the Latin/Western Church. Later they came to be called Orthodox and Catholic receptively. The former was the main form of Christianity in the eastern part of the Roman Empire and was headed by the patriarchs of Alexandria, (Egypt) Antioch (Syria) and Jerusalem. The latter was the main form of Christianity in the western part of this empire and was headed by the bishop of Rome, who later also came to be called the Pope.
