After the Union army defeated the Southern soldiers in battles, many blacks left the places where they were kept as slaves and went over to the Union lines, showing the Union soldiers places in the nearby area that might help them to win the war. Many former black slaves joined General William T. Sherman's army as he marched through the south from Georgia, to South and North Carolina.
