Yes that is true. The bloodiest, deadliest battle OF THE ENTIRE WAR took place in the Battle of the Bulge. It was a battle offensive started by the Nazi Germans. The battle went on for a while and the line was pushed back and forth until it became a losing maneuver. The German's did not advance and they depleted a lot of their people and military supply. The allied forces lost a ton of troops. The story is complex and long so I am giving you a web link below for you to read and to see photos.
Some of the foregoing is correct as regards WW2, but by far the bloodiest fighting in that war took place in the defence of Stalingrad, which was eventually won by the Russians and turned the tide of the war against the Germans. In WW1, it is true that the bloodiest fighting took place on the Western Front, with both sides suffering very heavy losses in men and material.
The battle to which you refer was actually on September 17, 1862. It took place in western Maryland. The North called it Antietam after a creek that runs through the battlefield. In the South it is called Sharpsburg, the name of the town nearby. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in the entire war with about 23,000 casualties.
During a war, a "front" is a place where armies are fighting battles. In World War I, most of the major battles were in Europe. So in World War I, "Western Front" refers to the front in the western portion of Europe- it was mainly in northern France, where Germany had invaded. The "Eastern Front" was in Eastern Europe, primarily around the borders between Russia and Germany/Austria-Hungary.
The main fighting took place on the Western Front (France and Belgium), the Italian Front (Italy), the Eastern Front (Russia) and the Balkan Front (Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria). Fighting also took place in the Middle East (Iraq and Palestine), Turkey and in the North Sea.

The setting of "All Quiet on the Western Front" is primarily in the trenches on the Western Front during World War I. The story takes place in various locations along the front lines, including battlefields, dugouts, and military camps. The harsh and brutal conditions of war heavily influence the setting of the novel.
