If you put the cursor onto a cell with content and press the space bar, it will get rid of the content, of the current cell, but replace it with a space, which means the cell is not completely empty. If you want to get rid of what is in the cell, you are better to press the Delete key.

When you press the spacebar, whatever is in the cell will be replaced with a space. You won't see anything in the cell, but because there is a space in it, then technically it is not clear. So you are better to use the Delete key.

Pressing the spacebar on a cell with some content will remove that content. However it will replace it with a space, so technically the cell is not actually clear as it contains a space character. So pressing the Delete key is the better way to clear a cell.

By itself, it just adds in a space, like it does in all applications. If you do Ctrl-Spacebar you can select a column. If you do Shift-Spacebar you can select a row. If you do both of those one after the other, in either order, it will select the entire worksheet.

Most of the time it will, but certain formatting conditions will leave a blank space in the cell. It is better to use delete to clear a cell.

Why does the whole word delete when you press the back space key in Excel?

When you press the back space key while you have the cursor on a cell, you will delete the entire cell. If you want to delete only one character, select the cell, put your cursor in the formula bar at the top of the screen, then press the backspace key (that way you will edit only one character at a time instead of the entire cell).
