I'm not sure exactly what the intent of this question and the category, so I will give it a try. Leather holsters have been used for a long time for carrying pistols. The German Lugar was so suceptible to malfunction if exposed to dirt that its holster completely enclosed the pistol. In that case the holster actually protects the gun. Rifles were also kept in saddle holsters. Even earlier than this, rifles were carried in a buckskin case to protect it from the elements and to keep the powder dry. Guns should not be stored for long periods in holsters. The leather may retain moisture which will cause the gun to rust when it comes in contact with it. Also, if dirt or sand is introduced to the holster, this can cause scratches. Q: Would the new web and snythetic holsters be better? Which is better?
