Magnesium itself is an element; Not a compound.

If you were given a sample of elemental magnesium and a sample of some magnesium compound, and asked to identify which is which, the colour and texture of the compound will be different depending on what the Mg has reacted with.

You'd have to conduct an experiment with various reactions (Mg + oxygen, Mg + Hydrogen, Mg + Sulphur ...etc) to find a match.
