Best Answer

Metal oxide is the ionic bond combination of any metal element of the Periodic Table of elements with oxygen. The alkali metals and alkali earth metals are respectively the first and second columns of elements found on the periodic table. Thus, alkali metal oxides and earth metal oxides are types of metal oxides, but metal oxide does not imply alkali.

Is potassium a metal metalloid or a non metal?

No potassium OXIDE is not: IT IS A METAL. IT IS A METAL.And it is not a NONmetal either.Potassium OXIDE K2O is a basic oxide: with water it forms (only) potassium hydroxide, KOHPotassium (elemental) is a alkali metal

What product is formed when alkali metals are heated with oxygen?

Is sodium an alkaline?

sodium oxide (solid) is NOT an alkali. sodium oxide forms sodium hydroxide (aqueous) is an alkali. so sodium oxide becomes an alkali only when in aqueous form and in aqueous form it is called sodium hydroxide.

It is strongly basic as it is an oxide of an alkali metal.

When alkali metals react with oxygen and form compounds that dissolve in water they produce solutions that are what on the pH scale?

alkali metal + oxygen --> metal oxide metal oxide + water--> metal hydroxide metal hydroxides are strong alkalis, corrosive pH=14

Why zink oxide is called amphoteric oxide?

An amphoteric metal oxide is the oxide of a metal that can form either simple metal cations or oxyanions, depending on reaction conditions. If zinc oxide is reacted with a stong acid, a simple zinc salt including the anion of the reacting acid will form. In contrast, if zinc oxide is reacted with a strong alkali, a zincate salt containing the anion ZnO2-2 along with the cation of the strong alkali will result.

Do all bases contain hydroxide ions?

A BASE is a metal oxide. A soluble base is an ALKALI and contains hydroxide ions. (-OH) Sodium oxide (Na2O) is a BASE Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is an ALKALI. The alkali comes about because the sodium oxide dissolved in water to form the alkali. Na2O + H2O = 2NaOH .

The word equation for the reaction of alkali metals with water?
