Motors do not 'consume' power, 'real' or otherwise, as power is simply the rate at which energy is consumed.
So, the rate at which a motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy does indeed represent the 'true power' of the machine. This is because the work done by the machine is due to the in-phase ('resistive') component of the machine's load current (equivalent to a purely-resistive load), whereas the quadrature component represents the reactive power of the machine.
