A narrative is simply a way of telling a story that may or may not be fictional. Most of the literature we could fall under the narrative format. Examples might be the narrative (or narration) provided by Dr. Watson in the Sherlock Holmes novels (fiction) or the narrative of events relayed by Benjamin Franklin in his own autobiography.
