It is sometimes difficult to tell; our judgment of the size of another galaxy is greatly influenced by the DISTANCE to the other galaxy, and the distance to another galaxy is sometimes tough to know with any precision. Astronomers have revised their distance estimates several times, and we cannot know that we're right THIS time.

But based on what we currently believe to be true, the Milky Way is a larger-than-average galaxy similar to the Andromeda galaxy.

How many stars does the Cartwheel Galaxy contain?

Answer: These numbers are only estimates of course. Over the years estimates of the numbers of stars in our Galaxy has gradually increased. Good sources give various numbers ranging from about 200 billion up to 500 billion. I think the higher numbers are more likely to be correct. Our Milky Way Galaxy is, very roughly, average. So, a typical galaxy should contain a few hundred billion stars. Answer: It is very hard to give a "typical" number. The answer above refers mainly to our own galaxy, but there are lots of galaxies that are much, much smaller - and there are also giants that are much larger than our galaxy. Thus, a typical galaxy may contain anywhere between about 10 million stars, and a trillion (i.e., a million million) stars, although you'll probably find galaxies with more than that.

Is the M87 galaxy 54 million light years away?

It doesn't make much sense to talk about something being 52 light-years away from a galaxy: A typical galaxy has a diameter of about 100,000 light-years, and doesn't have a clearly-defined border. Distances between galaxies are hundreds of thousands, or millions, of light-years.It doesn't make much sense to talk about something being 52 light-years away from a galaxy: A typical galaxy has a diameter of about 100,000 light-years, and doesn't have a clearly-defined border. Comets are considered to belong to the solar system if they?

They have to orbit the sun or orbit a planet. This means they are if they are in the Galaxy.

How many star does a typical galaxy have?

Our galaxy, the Milky Way, has somewhere between 100 billion and 400 billion stars (it's difficult to estimate precisely). However, it's not really "typical"; it has more stars than any other galaxy in the "Local Group" except for the Andromeda Galaxy, which has about a trillion stars. I'm not sure there really is such a thing as a "typical" galaxy.

What galaxy is considered nearest to our galaxy?

Not counting the Magellanic Clouds (which are minielliptical galaxies orbiting our galaxy), the Andromeda galaxy is the galaxy nearest to our galaxy.

How is a milky way galaxy different from a regular spiral galaxy?

It isn't. The "Milky Way" is our earthbound name for the spiral galaxy where we live, which is believed to be a very typical spiral galaxy.
