A little of both. Palomino is a color that is seen in several different breeds. Quarter Horses, Paints, American Saddlebreds, half Arabs, and very rarely, Thouroghbreds can have the golden color of Mr. Ed. So you can see that these horses are not the same breed but can be have the palomino colored coat.

Palomino is also what is known as a 'color breed'. This means that different breeds of horses, like the ones listed above, can be registered as Palomino. No breed is refused as long as he/she has the palomino coat. An similar example would be a Paint and Pinto. Paint is a breed, Pinto is a color pattern, accepted in different breeds. But as long as your horse meets the color requirements, your Paint can be double registered as a Pinto.

Depending on the area that you live in, there are shows held for color breeds. Keep in mind if you plan to attend and participate in a color breed show that the judging will be different than at a regular breed show, such as a Quarter Horse show. Your palomino Quarter Horse (just an example) will be competing against, maybe half Arabs, some gaited horses, ect. Basically these are 'open' shows and the judge can't follow the rule of ideal breed type.

Can you breed a gold champagne to a liver chestnut to get a chocolate palomino?

No. There are 2 totally different sets of genes that make up these two colors. Champagne is a dilution gene and there is now a test for it. (see Related Links for more information) Liver Chestnut is genetically just chestnut (same color as sorrel) but is visually darker. There are many shades of a red base color but they are still all a red base color. There is no test for Liver Chestnut because, at this time, it is not considered a color at all, but a way to describe a darker red horse. If you breed a gold champagne to a liver chestnut, you can get chestnut, gold champagne, liver chestnut or a darker gold champagne. The chances for Liver or the darker gold champagne is probably less than plain chestnut/sorrel or gold champagne. Chocolate Palomino is also not a "color" but is a word to describe a darker palomino. Could be a sooty gene darkening the palominos appearance. There are other colors that people call chocolate too and they are totally unrelated genetically to the palomino. Silver dapple is the best example.

Is palomino a breed or color of horse?

The Palomino registry is a color registry. The horse must be the correct color to be registered with the breed. A horse can be a palomino and not a member of the breed, but the breed has only palomino colored horses in it. Palomino is a breed and a color although it is most often used as the color for example i have a Palomino Dun Appaloosa

Is palomino a breed?

The palomino is a breed and a color. The breed just has certain rules the horse must follow. like the parents must be palomino, and the horse must be a certain shade of gold, ect. The palomino as a color is just a golden color with a white mane and tail and dark skin, versus light pink skin, which would classify the horse as a champagne.

How big do palominos get?

It depends on the genetics of the horse. You can have anything from a palomino miniature to a palomino draft. Remember palomino is a color not a breed.

Palomino is a color, not a breed. A horses color doesn't really affect the way a foal is born. This menas that a palomino colored foal is born in the same way that a foal of any other color would be.
