Why is peach pie southern?

Peaches grow well in parts of the South. Georgia is well known for its peaches and leads in commercial peach production. While other Southern states, in addition to Georgia, boast hearty peach productions, peaches are also grown in Michigan, California, Colorado.

Even though peaches are grown outside of the Southern US, peach cobbler is still considered a decidedly Southern dessert. The baking term know as cobbler originated in the South. A cobbler is a batter that is covered with fruit and baked. As the dough rises around the fruit, it takes on an appearance slightly similar to a cobbled street.
