Petroleum is generated within the subsurface through a specific phenomenon which comprises of physical and chemical changes to the organic matter present within the subsurface. These phenomenon in order to occur require greater depths, temperature and pressure. These conditions are provided by geological alterations during the tectonic plate movements. This is a very long time taking process and may take era to convert the organic matter into hydrocarbons. Depending on the depth, pressure and temperature, hydrocarbons are available in the subsurface in the form of either crude oil or natural gas.
Thus it could be said that petroleum is renewable in terms of Earth ages but not practically when compared to human ages.
Thus petroleum needs to be used in such a way to acquire sustainability.
