That is right, phosphorous is a non metal. The group of 17 nonmetals can be identified on a periodic chart very easily. The non metals include everything in the very rough triangle formed by Carbon, Radon and Helium. Hydrogen is clear at the top left, but it too has the distinction of being a non metal.
