Best Answer

Yes and No.

Some of the advantages of working with pine is that it is about 1/10 the cost of common hardwoods like oak and almost every hardware/lumber store has many different sizes and cuts of pine lumber to choose from. Pine is relatively soft and can be easy to cut, carved and sanded.

The disadvantages of using pine is that it is extremely soft. It warps, dents and scratches extremely easy. Pine also contains more sap than most woods, and can be sticky and messy to work with as well as coat your blades and tools with pitch. Pine also needs to acclimatize to the environment it will exist in as a finished product. Pine is often very wet, and when it dries i can crack and warp. Sometimes you have to let pine sit inside your workshop/house for months, to let it dry properly before your project, otherwise once assembled into a piece of furniture, it may warp. There is always exceptions to the rule. You can minimize the warping factor by using pine as the framework, and other woods like hardwood plywood or oak as the coverings. You can also pick through the best looking and driest pieces at the store.
