The "2" describes how many atoms of that substance there are - it shows that there are 2 hydrogen atoms. There is no "1" for o, or oxygen, because without a number, we automatically know that there is 1 atom, and not, say, six.
This may sound confusing, but it works out.

hydrogen can not be ionized. there are not enough protons or neutrons in the neucleus to support an extra electron for a negative ion. A hydrogen atom is merely a proton orbited by an electron, meaning that if it were to lose it's single electron, it would just become a single proton and a single electron. nothing more.
A proton is a subatomic particle which is the same in whichever element it is found. A proton from a Xenon atom is no different to that from a Hydrogen atom or a Uranium atom.
The answer for a hydrogen atom would be about 100 meters across a proton is about 1/10,000 th of the diameter of a hydrogen atom.
