There are several reasons for calling Purple a royal colour:-
Only the most expensive dyes were used to produce the color purple, it therefore became symbolic with wealth and power.
Purple togas were worn by the all powerful Roman Emperors.
People who were allowed to wear the color purple during the Elizabethan era, as decreed by the English Sumptuary Laws, were the Queen, Queen's mother, children, and sisters, and aunts. The King, King's mother, children, brethren, and uncles
Red is more commonly a colour of heros, athletes, and strong masculine charactures.
Blue and purple are the colours more commonly associated with royalty. Some colour charts (found at retail outlets specializing in paint and decoration) even have a "Royal Blue".
The association of purple with royalty had to do with the rarilty of the pigments that create a purple dye. That rarity made the dye extremely expensive, and in ancient times only royalty could afford to buy it.
