According to the Catholic Church, which has been guaranteed by Our Blessed Lord and the Holy Spirit:
1) most of the ghosts that we see are either souls in purgatory asking for prayers or demons masquerading as departed people.
2) Demons, unfortunately, are all too real. They are fallen angels who have been condemned to Hades for all eternity. Their only aim left is to drag others down with them.
3) Reincarnation, unfortunately, is just a fairy tale. We are given one life, and with that life we make our decision where we are going to spent eternity.
Given all of that, should you see any kind of spirit, the only thing to do is to pray. If it is a real ghost, then it is genuinely asking for your prayers to help it on its journey through purgatory to heaven. If it is not, then you definitely need to be praying and asking your guardian angel and patron saint for immediate help!
