Salt is the leftover material when an acid has been mixed with a base (alkali), The mixture left is Salt (of 2 combined chemicals).

For example, normal table salt:

NaOH (Base - Sodium Hydroxide) + HCl (Acid - Hydrogen Chloride) = NaCl (Sodium Chloride) + H20 (Water)

There are different types of salt you can make from mixing other Acids and Bases, But Sodium Chloride is the only human-friendly one.
