Onyx, Sard & Sardonyx are all varieties of the micro-crystalline quartz chelcedony. Onyx is similar in look to agate, but has straight rather than curved bands. Sardonyx is commonly brown, brownish red, and white in color. The most common uses for sardonyx was seals for wax, cameos in jewelry and as the birthstone for the month of August.
