If you mean public school, they are almost the same. Private schools, especially universities, are much more demanding in the US (Harvard, MIT, Yale) because of resources and income are taken for granted, so they can be much more selective on future candidates.

I use to live in Mexico and in elementary, kids go to school from 8 or 9 a.m. To 12 or 1 p.m. And in middle from 7 a.m. To 2:30 or 3:00 in high school is the same as in middle so it's way more than here AND way "harder" but for me that hardness is normal and sometimes easy... Here in the US everything is a pice of cake :)
