Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. Many people have a slight curvature less than 5 degrees that is not worth worrying about but as you age this curve can increase causing pain at various points of the body depending on what part of the spinal chord is affected as well as localized pain in the back. In extreme cases spinal fusion may be required to rectify the curve.
"Idiopathic" means unknown cause, so by definition, the pathophysiology of idiopathic scoliosis is a bit murky. However, virtually every researcher thinks it is primarily a neurological condition that has its primary affects on the spine. While the origin of the condition is most likely an under-development of the postural control centers in the brain stem, it probably has environmental "drivers" which could be bio-mechanical, bio-chemical, or specific activity related.
There is a really good 90 sec FLASH presentation on this site.

It is a condition. Scoliosis, unlike a disease, is something transferred genetically, not through the environment.
Scoliosis is a condition/disease of the spine, this is a lifelong condition and never goes away.Surgery can help correct curves but does not take the Scoliosis away
It is a disorder not a disease, I have slight spinal scoliosis, and my friend has major spinal scoliosis.
Scoliosis is a descriptive term for a spinal condition. Scoliosis means curvature
1. Scoliosis is NOT a DISEASE. It is a CONDITION. 2. Your question is grammatically incorrect. 3. It probably (don't quote me on this) has something to do with the second X chromosome. (Males have an X and a Y chromosome, and females have two X's)
firstly scoliosis is a 'condition' secondly, i guess it kind of is have you ever seen your body in that condition? i have, when your hips arent in line with the rest of your body and you have 1cm of space between your bottom rib and your hip bone, that's a bit freaky. it can cause alot of insecurity.
Scoliosis.
Scoliosis is a condition which results from asymmetrical growth of the vertebral bodies._______________From Dr. Lamantia:Yes, it is a disease. Scoliosis is most commonly found in female adolescents between the ages 12 and 14. However scoliosis may also develop in adulthood as a secondary condition to injury or degenerative arthritis. Non surgical treatments such as the spinecor brace-- looks like this (see phtos: http:/www.spinebracespecialists.com/scoliosis_brace.html), or an exercise method such as the Schroth Method (see photos http:/www.spinebracespecialists.com/schroth_method.html) are the best treatments available today.
scoliosis ((Another: Stupidity))

Rickets, scoliosis.
The history of scoliosis treatment is as old as the condition of idiopathic scoliosis itself. The first known historical records of scoliosis come from the Greeks (Hippocrates, the father of medicine, none-the-less) in 400 BC and Galen who first coined the term "scoliosis" sometime between 131-201 AD.
Scoliosis is a spinal condition, meaning it only occurs in the spine. There are other questions asking the same thing. Look them up.
