In order that the general public would not know how long killer whales live in captivity (which isn't as long as they live in the wild), Sea World names most of their killer whales Shamu. Yes!... Shamu was Captured by Ted Griffin in Puget Sound in 1965, Shamu was intended to be a companion for the orca Namu in Griffin's Seattle aquarium. Shamu was however quickly leased and eventually sold to Sea World in Florida. She performed in several Sea World shows and eventually died on August 23, 1971. The name Shamu has since been used for many different orcas in Sea World shows.
