They can be. If you lie a lot, they can definitely be your best friend. Your best friend is always there for you, and does not lie to you (often, an occasional lie is inevitable).

that's a really mean thing to do, I can't believe someone would fall out with a friend and come to the conclusion that it would be a great idea to lie to someone and tell them they're close to you when they're actually not at all. "Fake friend" that's disgusting. I don't really think you deserve a free ticket out of this at all, so good luck finding your way out of this one. In the future don't make "fake friends", perhaps if you were a nicer person your "real" ones wouldn't fall out with you so often.
