Sputnik 2 completed one orbit on its mission on November 3, 1957. It carried the dog Laika, the first living being to orbit the Earth.
No Sputnik was a series of early satellites sent up by Russia/ the Soviet Union. the second in the series, Sputnik 2 carried a dog into space. But since Sputnik means something like travelling companion in Russian it seems quite likely that there are dogs with that name too.
The first dog to go into space in 1957 was Laika, a female stray dog from Moscow. She was a part of the Soviet Union's Sputnik 2 mission, which made her the first living being to orbit the Earth. Unfortunately, Laika did not survive the mission.
Liaka the dog rode that one way wild ride. She was never heard from again :(
Laika was a Soviet space dog who became the first animal to orbit the Earth aboard Sputnik 2 in 1957. The mission was one-way, and sadly, Laika did not survive the journey.
Sputnik I, was the first earth-orbiting artificial satellite. It was launched into low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union October 4, 1957. One month after the launching of Sputnik I, on November 3, 1957, Sputnik II, a satellite weighing 1,120 pounds and containing the dog "Laika" was sent into orbit.
Yes, Laika the space dog was sent on a one-way trip to space by the Soviet Union in 1957 and unfortunately did not survive. She perished a few hours after the mission was launched due to overheating and stress. The spacecraft could not be recovered, so Laika's body remained in space.
Sputnik 2 carried the first living being into orbit, a female part-Samoyed terrier originally named Kudryavka (Little Curly) but later renamed Laika ("Barker"). She weighed about 6 kg (13 lb). Laika unfortunately died after only a short period of time from the combination of stress, overheating, and limited oxygen. Sputnik 2 was also one of the first to detect the Van Allen radiation belt but they didn't know its significance.
The first living being in orbit was Laika, a Soviet space dog, who was launched on November 3, 1957, aboard the spacecraft Sputnik 2. Unfortunately, Laika's mission was one-way, as technology at the time did not allow for successful recovery of living organisms from orbit.
The first dog to go into space was Laika.
Laika was a part husky part terrier and was one of the first animals in space. Laika was the first animal to orbit the earth.
Laika=The dog Laika, the first living creature to orbit the Earth, did not live nearly as long as Soviet officials led the world to believe. The animal, launched on a one-way trip on board Sputnik 2 in November 1957, was said to have died painlessly in orbit about a week after blast-off.Oct 28, 2002
