Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is a nonsense word that was used as a song title in the American musical film Mary Poppins (1964), and the word was repeated in the song, which was sung by Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke. The song was written by the songwriters Robert and Richard Sherman. Richard said that the word was made up by them for inclusion in the song. So is a 'made up' word really a word? Yes and No! Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious has not entered into the common language and most dictionaries do not list it. Linguistic analysis of the word produces a confusing definition and etymology. In the context of the song it would seem initially to simply mean nothing in particular, just a word to use to sound clever, but later in the song it seems to be used to mean 'very super' or "super and delicious" ! -------------------------------------- For more detailed information, plus full song lyrics and musical rendition, see Related Links below the following three advertisements. --------------------------------------
