I had a multiple humerus fracture 16 weeks ago. Three places. I did not need an operation and things are starting to move nicely, physio is not pleasant and I suffer after driving but my problem is the swelling of my inner arm between shoulder and elbow. I feel as though I'm stuck with it. Anyone had any experience, how long did it take for the swelling to reduce? I am 68 and have osteopennia which is now being treated.

Does a stress fracture always appear on a x-ray?

No - it depends on when the picture is taken (before or after swelling has been reduced) and the angle of the picture. If the fracture is small enough and in a spot not covered by the picture, it can easily be missed on a first pass. Swelling with stress fractures can often mask it as well, and it's common for doctors to let the swelling go down some before pictures are taken. X-rays are taken by placing the patient in standard positions for the best viewing angle of the bone being X-rayed; however, that doesn't always mean it's the optimum angle for all injuries. The only way to know is if the pain and swelling continue past the first week. If the pain and swelling continue past the first week and it's still bruised, they can take another X-ray with contrast dye if needed to help illuminate the area of the potential fracture to help it show up better.

What are the symptoms of ankle bone hairline fracture?

Most fractures that aren't compound in nature first and foremost hurt like hell; second, they always swell up a lot; and depending on the severity, they may or may not bruise, but usually if the bone is fractured bruising does occur - at least it has in every fracture I've ever had, and that's quite a few. The only way to determine for sure of course is with an X-ray, but they normally want you to wait until the swelling goes down before taking it as swelling impedes the picture of the bone. Many X-rays in the past that were taken immediately after an injury would show no fracture, but on re-examination and another X-ray after swelling had gone down, the fracture would be seen. That's why today they usually make you wait before taking one if you're swollen as they know the picture won't be as accurate.

Is the ulna inferior to the humerus?

The ulna is only considered inferior in strength and size. Because the ulna is smaller than the humerus, it is weaker. Though, the ulna is not lesser than the humerus because each and every bone in the body is needed and is very important, which is the main definition of inferior, which is 'lesser than'.
