Even though the US Constitution was said to be "a living document" neither it nor the Declaration of Independence is alive. The oldest known surviving formal document(s) from history are the Dead Sea Scrolls which are about 2000 years old. There are cave paintings and smaller fragments that have been found that are older still. The oldest surviving documents from US history are probably contemporary trasnscriptions of The Mayflower Compact in in Mourt's Relation and William Bradford's journal Of Plymouth Plantation .

He was also alive to see George Washington become the first president of the new United States of America. Franklin was in the midst of much of the news in the 1700s, because he was an inventor, a printer and publisher, a postmaster, an author, and a world traveler; and in his role as a diplomat, he helped to negotiate a treaty with France in 1778.
