The Franciscan friars were established in the early 13th century as a mendicant Order - meaning that they existed on contributions and donations and by begging. They usually had a friary complex of buildings (church, dormitory, refectory and so on), but they worked in the streets, preaching, assisting the poor and the sick and spreading the word of God in an active way.
This was completely opposite to the role of monks, who were all entirely cloistered and contemplative (hence the use of the two distinct terms: friar and monk).
