The M1 Garand is widely regarded by military historians, veterans, firearms experts and analysts around the world as the overall best rifle of WWII, and the finest rifle the United States has ever issued. Probably the twentieth century's most significant, and admired rifle, awell as one of the greatest firearms technological breakthroughs.
However the term "best" cannot be applied to any single rifle, each era, and time period/conflict has its different needs, tactics, requirements and doctrines. In WWII/Korea, the M1 rifle proved to be the most effective, and dominating service rifle of the war, all other rifles of the world were either slower more primitive bolt action rifle designs of the late 19th century, or were semi-automatics that were plagued with high costs, relativly poor quality, and overly-complicated systems that were never generally issued to all troops. The Garand design (unlike the other semi-automatics which were designed in only a couple of years and under wartime conditions and limited development and production budgets) was designed over the course of 2 decades, and had all its problems smoothened out, and was designd with a practically infinate budget, it proved time and again to be extermely rugged, reliable, and solid under extremely poor conditions, also it was extremely simple to operate, and mantain in the field and soldiers loved it, swore by it, phraised it and bet their life on it, and it came through with flying colors.
It was so well designed that it remained in service from 1936 to 1965, and (if it weren't for the adoption and standardization of box magazine fed assault rifles post war), it would likely have remained the primary service rifle even today. Over 2 dozen foreign nations adopted it as their standard service rifle after the war, quickly retiring their British and German made rifles for the new more effective M1s, The Garand design is still in full use today, known as the M-14/M-21DMR/EBR, also as the civilian M-1A,and Ruger Mini 14 and Mini 30, awell as the mlitary/law enforcement AC-556 assault cabines. Its well respected and revered design is also found in many foreign made designs, such as the Itailian BM-59. The Japanese in WWII had captured a number of M1s and had even gone against the tradition of only using Japanese designed weapons, and attempted to copy the Garand and designate it "Type 5", however none saw any service, and ony made it to he conceptual testing phases before the war ended.
