The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the largest steel arch bridge in the world, though not the longest, with the top of the bridge standing 134 metres above the harbour. At 48.8 m wide, it is the widest bridge in the world (as of 2004).
However, the Hornibrook Highway, which was the first bridge to connect Brisbane with the Redcliffe Peninsula, used to be the longest road bridge in Australia. The 2.8km two-lane Hornibrook Highway was opened on 4 October 1935, and featured a single central arch where the channel of the river runs, allowing for fishing craft to pass underneath. Deterioration of the bridge through the years necessitated the building of a new bridge, and a replacement three lane bridge, the Houghton Highway, was opened in 1979. A second bridge running oarallel to the Houghton, the Ted Smout Bridge, was completed in 2010. The Hornibrook Highway has now been dismantled.
