Shampoo would be better. Dish soap is safe, but it's harsh and will dry out the fur and skin and make the animal itchy. If you don't have anything else and you have to use dish soap, feed the animal some salmon or at the very least, put some fish oil ( the kind you get at the drugstore--just put a pin in the capsule) on the food. This will help the fur and make the animal very soft.
