If you refer to the units, both the light-year and the parsec are often used. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year; about 9.5 x 1012 kilometers (9.5 million million kilometers). A parsec is about 3.26 light-years.

There are several measurements that are customarily used to measure stellar distances.

The most common, perhaps, is the light-year; the distance that light travels in one year. Another would be the 'parallax-second of arc" or "parsec", which is approximately equal to 3.26 light years.

For very large distances, the term mega-parsec is sometimes used, often abbreviated as "Mpc". This is one million parsecs, and is used when we're talking about the distances to other galaxies.

There are several valid measuring methods. You can use miles or kilometers as usual, but the numbers get to be unmanageably large quite rapidly. Within the solar system, astronomers use "Astronomical Units", or AU. One AU is equal to the distance from the Earth to the Sun, about 93 million miles.

Beyond the solar system, many astronomers use light-years, the distance that light travels in one year.

Less commonly used is the "par-sec" or "parallax second of arc". This is approximately equal to 3.25 light years.

Each star is slightly different in composition, and the precise quantity of various atoms in the star can be determined by its spectrum; the precise color bands in the light. And since we can see the precise patterns of light bands that represent hydrogen, and helium, and carbon and everything else, we can also see when those precise patterns are shifted in color based on the Doppler shift; things moving toward us will be shifted a little more to the blue side, while stars moving away are shifted a little to the red end.

This only helps us determine the RADIAL speed - the component of the speed that is directly toward or away from the Earth. A star moving straight sideways, either toward us or away, would have almost no Doppler shift.
