I just learned this today. All you need to do is jump, but, be careful. You cannot get the shell back until you find another one of those blue shell-shaped block. Luigi can hit Mario with the hammer to make him move. :) Good luck trying to finish the game!

Games like the Mario & Luigi series and Paper Mario don't save after you beat the final boss. Because this games follow a storyline, you can't just go back and defeat the bosses when you feel like it. It wouldn't make sense.
