To those who follow the Mormon faith, the Book of Mormon is indeed another testament of Jesus Christ, and His eternal position as the Savior and mediator of all mankind. To them, the Book of Mormon compliments and supports the teachings of the Bible, not replaces it.
Just as the Bible is a record of God's dealings with people in the Eastern hemisphere, which includes the prophecies, birth, ministry, teachings, crucifiction, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as the savior of the world, the Book of Mormon contains writings from people who lived in the Western Hemisphere.
The writings of the Book of Mormon contain the histories of these people from about the time of the tower of Babel, to about 400 AD. The prophets in the book testify of Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, and record His dealings with them. Found in the Book of Mormon are prophecies of Jesus' birth, ministry from prophets, and a first hand account of the natural disasters that occurred following His crucifiction. Following His resurrection, the Savior visited the people in the Western hemisphere, and taught the His gospel. This event is recorded in the 3 Nephi 11 in the Book of Mormon.
